Overwhelmed by Skincare? Start Here.
Skincare can feel so overwhelming at first and honestly, I get why. TikTok is packed with advice that sounds convincing, and if you don’t fully understand how the skin functions, it’s easy to assume it’s all legitimate. Add in the fact that many facialists (myself included) genuinely love products, and recommendations can sometimes start to feel like a never-ending list.
So let’s bring it back to the basics: what does your skin actually need?
Recently, I had a client come in who was using a lot of products, but none of them consistently. She had a shelf full of options and would “use whatever feels good” in the moment. The problem was, her skin was both congested and dehydrated. We had a lot of work to do together to get her to a place where she felt confident and comfortable in her skin again.
Truthfully, the first step was a purge. Not just of her skin but of her product shelf too. We needed to clear out everything that wasn’t serving her, and rebuild a routine that was simple and realistic to stick with.
This is why I’m always reminding clients that less really is more. You don’t need a 10-step routine to see results. Sometimes, what your skin is asking for is simplicity. Small steps. Consistency. A routine that supports your skin barrier instead of constantly challenging it.
If you’re not sure where to start, here’s the truth: there are three products every routine should be built on.
A great cleanser, a moisturizer, and an SPF.
Yes that serum you love isn’t the most important part of your routine. The foundation matters more.
Your cleanser sets the tone for everything that comes after. If you’re using a foaming cleanser on dry or dehydrated skin because you love that squeaky-clean feeling, I can almost guarantee you’re doing more harm than good. That tight, “clean” feeling isn’t your skin being refreshed it’s your barrier being stripped.
And when your barrier is compromised, the skin often responds with dehydration, irritation, congestion, and breakouts… even when you feel like you’re doing “all the right things.”
At The Nest, my goal is always to help you create a routine that fits your skin, your lifestyle, your budget and most importantly, one you can actually maintain. Because the best skincare routine isn’t the fanciest one.
It’s the one you’ll stick to.
