A Lifetime in the Sun

We tend to think of sun damage as dark spots. It's much more than that.

Most of us picture pigmentation when we hear the words sun damage, but UV exposure affects almost every layer of the skin. Over time it breaks down collagen and elastin, contributes to uneven pigmentation, slows the skin's ability to repair itself, and can leave the complexion looking rough, dull, and less resilient. It's also the biggest environmental factor in premature skin ageing.

The important thing to remember is that this doesn't happen because you spent one afternoon at the beach. Sun damage is cumulative. It's the result of thousands of small exposures over many years.

Prevention will always be easier than correction.

I'm not here to tell you to avoid the outdoors. And honestly, I’m in the sun as often as possible. Sunshine is good for our mood, and for many of us, our mental health.

Instead, think about reducing unnecessary exposure. Simple habits make a bigger difference than most people realize: Wear sunscreen every day, even overcast days. Reapply when you're outside for extended periods. Find shade during the strongest afternoon sun when possible. Wear a hat to cover your face and neck.

Doing something is far more important than perfection.

Can sun damage be reversed?

Some of it can absolutely be improved.

Pigmentation often responds well to professional treatments such as chemical peels, laser treatments, targeted home care ingredients, and consistent sun protection. Fine lines, texture, and collagen loss can also be improved, although they usually require a combination of treatments over time.

Think of pigmentation as an iceberg. What you’re seeing on the surface is a tiny bit of the whole. It takes time to correct, but can absolutely be done.

The goal isn't perfect “glass” skin. It's healthier skin that functions well and continues to improve year after year.

Why I'm featuring chemical peels this month.

Chemical peels are one of my favourite treatments for sun-damaged skin in the summer because they encourage healthy cell turnover and can gradually soften pigmentation while improving overall skin texture and radiance.

They're not about making your skin peel dramatically. They're about choosing the right peel for your skin and building healthy change over time. My approach is always to reach for something effective without being unnecessarily aggressive.

As always, we'll decide together whether they're the right fit for your skin.

One final thought

Your skin tells the story of a life well lived. Laughing outside, walking the dog, gardening, vacations, afternoons at the lake.

The goal isn't to erase that story.

It's to help your skin stay as healthy as possible for the chapters still to come.
