Fall is Not a Skin Type
Every September I watch skincare advice shift to “it’s time to transition your routine” or “time to switch to richer creams.” Which for some skins and some places in the world that may be true, but your skin doesn't look at the calendar and suddenly decide it needs a completely different routine.
Skin is a dynamic organ. It is constantly responding to what is happening around you and to what is happening within you. Temperature, humidity, UV exposure, hormones, stress, medications, products, treatments and even smoke from forest fires can all influence how your skin behaves. So while September can be a good time to reassess your skin, I don't think it should ever mean throwing out half your bathroom cabinet and starting over.
One of the biggest mistakes I see folks making during the transition from summer to fall here in Victoria is thinking you need to do more. They add in a more intensive exfoliant, start using heavier creams, adding in multiple serums. When you change several things at once, you lose the ability to know what is actually helping and what’s harming. Instead, take a step back and look at what your skin is telling you.
How does it feel after cleansing? Has your dryness actually increased, or are you simply assuming it should because it’s fall? Are you experiencing more congestion? Has pigmentation become more noticeable? Are the products you’ve been using all summer still working well for you?
Those answers are far more useful than the season on the calendar.
Think of September as a check-in, not a reset
I actually love the idea of a seasonal check-in and usually recommend it. September naturally gives us an opportunity to slow down, reassess and get back into a routine after the long, busy days of summer.
This can also be a good time to think about treatments. If you’re considering addressing pigmentation, texture, scarring or collagen loss, the transition into lower-UV months may be an appropriate time to start planning a treatment series. But even then, the treatment should be chosen because it makes sense for your skin and your goals, not simply because it’s September.
Let your skin be the guide
Your skin doesn’t need to follow a seasonal routine. It doesn’t need to be completely overhauled every few months, and it certainly doesn’t need to be “fixed” simply because summer is over.
It needs to be understood.
Your skin is constantly communicating with you. The goal isn’t to make it behave like someone else’s skin or follow a predetermined seasonal routine. It’s to understand what it needs now and give it the right support.
So as we move into a new season, resist the urge to buy a new routine or start changing everything at once. Let’s take a look at your skin. Figure out what has changed. Keep what is working and adjust what isn’t.
Because fall isn’t a skin type. And your skin doesn’t need a seasonal identity. It needs a little attention, a little consistency, and a routine that makes sense for you.
